For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts . Isaiah 55:9 KJV
Day 6- Gaurd you thoughts
When our children are small we try to guard them from seeing and hearing anything we perceive could be bad for them. Why do we not understand that God wants us to do the same for ourselves.?
The Psalmist David wrote: “I will set no evil thing before my eyes…” Psalm 101:3. Yet daily we can expose ourselves to seeing and hearing unhealthy things that effect what we turn our thoughts toward.
Some things we have no choice in, but those we do, like music we listen to or movies we watch, can be a vehicle to open us up for wrong thinking. I have found that for me, I can simple say, does what I am seeing or hearing honor my God?
Our mind is made up of what we take in through our eyes and our ears, so whenever possible we should diligently Guard our Thoughts. Since our thoughts effect our actions, behavior and speech, it is the root of what makes us who we are.
Think of your mind as a sponge. It drinks in and absorbs that which it sees and hears. Most of us are familiar with, “Children learn what they live”. In the earliest times of a child mind’s development it will absorb both good and bad things. Both are important in this life to train the mind that there are distinctions between the two.
When the Lord said to; “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he won’t depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6. That verse says a lot about training being a foundation.
During adolescent years and beyond it seems many will depart from training, but later in life return.
May the Lord help us today to train our thoughts to please him.
Today we live with so many choices as to what we can set our eyes and ears to be subject to. Too many choices! Spiritual discernment and caution can lend a hand in these choices. Earlier I mentioned Psalm 101:3 about setting no evil before our eyes, but the verse prior in Psalm 101:2 David writes, I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.
Could I invite my best friend Jesus over to my house while I see or listen to this program or listen to this music? Or would I enjoy it more alone or with one of my other friends?
Dear friend…..He is there….in the form of the Holy Spirit living within you now that you are saved. Remember the day you invited him in? He promised He would never leave nor forsake you.
Sometimes during these 31 Days of writing we are all callenged to explore into the deeper parts of ourselves. What we know, what we have learned and to take time to ponder our own thoughts.
It is a vulnerable place. One that exposes us through our words to not only other’s evaluation of those words, but perhaps more importantly, our own evaluation of our words. I don’t know about the others but for me sometimes my own words strike deep in my heart as I write. They awaken me to the knowledge I have learned and cause me to pause and ask myself: Do I practice what I preach?
James 4:17. “Therefore to him that knoweth to do Good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”
Today I share food for thought, or thoughts. Tomorrow we will explore various actions regarding our thoughts.
