What’s in a name?
Proverbs 22:1 tells us that a GOOD name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold. Not silver or gold! Both silver and gold!
I now use my given first and middle name. I truly never disliked either, I just never liked the sound of them together. After all who names their child Linda Darlene? My sister had a normal name, Kathy Ann. So for most of my life I associated them with my Mother calling them out together, to call me in for dinner and anyone within ear shot would hear them, and I hated that!
A last name for us women changes as we marry and mine has changed too many times to my liking. Now before any of you start thinking too hard on that, let me say this. I found the Lord through a beautiful Bible story about a woman like that at a well. If you would like, you can read about us in John 4:16-26.
So what does it mean to have a Good Name? Mine certainly was not of my choosing. Jeremiah 1:5 tells me that God knew me and surely knew what my name would be before my conception. But the Good Name the Lord speaks of we have a choice in. It’s value is greater than Silver & Gold. Such great worth and loving favor too?
I long to have God’s favor in my life, don’t we all? But having a good name in this life requires life choices that are pleasing to God. I do not always please God but I strive daily to make adjustments in my thoughts and manner that lead me toward that end.
During these next 31 Days through my words I hope to cause myself and others to give this verse deep consideration. The world needs to see more people who choose to have a Good Name.
