A while back I was visiting with my daughter, she is away at college. She was feeling regretful about her spending so I listened as she talked. I have found that listening is the best thing to do when someone needs to share their sorrowful spirit toward an action or behavior.
As a parent of grown children I choose my words and advice carefully and sparingly. ‘I understand’ is a comment I often use to avoid being too quick to respond with advice. I ended that conversation with sympathizing and letting her know I would pray for her and that I loved her.
My heart was broken for her and so I prayed and then I wrote her an email. I wrote it as if I was writing to myself as one would while doing a journal entry. It was not directed to her yet touched the heart of what I knew she needed to hear. I often write and so I sent it as, something I wanted to share.
She received it with gladness and gleaned some valuable advice from Mom in the process. I titled it (the wisdom of thrift). I share it with you today on my blog.
Wisdom of Thrift
I have finally after many years, found a place that sets a life on a course of plenty. Plenty of food, clothing, shelter and the comfort and ease of daily life. Oddly enough I have plenty because I have become thrifty.
People don’t typically seek to be thrifty but of necessity find this secret place and all the benefits and treasures it has to offer. The world does not steer us in this direction. Oh no quite the opposite. Buy, spend, spend what you have and use credit for anything else your eyes should see that you want.
I believe that Gods wisdom instructs and insists upon thrift. I see it many places in the Proverbs and each time it promises something positive.
You see riches in spiritual terms tied to it. Peace, joy and comfort of using with appreciation every small gift the Lord provides with respect. When you see everything through thrifty eyes you honor the Lord and give reverence to his provision.
I don’t know that there is a short cut to learn thrift. It seems to only be learned through lack and shortages of necessities and comforts during life here. It is a hard schoolmaster! But once you graduate you become a true success in life and living. Sadly some never graduate.
Thank you Lord for my diploma in Thrift!
